Everyone loves the beach, right? It’s a great place to enjoy the warm weather and long summer days. Still, hit the beach on the wrong day and you’ll find it impossible to find a parking space let alone a nice warm spot to dig your toes into the sand. With over 95,000 miles of coastline in the country though, there’s bound to be some special sunny spots not yet discovered by the rest of the world. Thus we present some of the most underrated beaches in the US:
Long Beach, New York
No, seriously, New York may not be immediately brought to mind beautiful beaches but if you cruise east of Queens and Brooklyn, you’ll discover a 2.1 mile-stretch of classic boardwalk running along white sand and blue water. Just a 45-minute train ride out of Manhattan you can enjoy five miles of sun and surf complete with surf shops, great restaurants, and lively bars. If you want even more privacy, check out Point Lookout and Lido beach parks where there are fewer amenities but even fewer people.
Okaloosa Island ,Florida
Looking to get away from the tourist crowds at Destin? Head for one of the beaches at Okaloosa Island. Surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Choctawhatchee Bay, and Santa Rosa Sound, this pristine white beach covers 875 acres. There are no overpriced condos, chain hotels, or tacky little souvenir shops, just a serene stretch of unobstructed ocean views and a fishing pier that’s a quarter of a mile long. Bring your fishing pole, bait, and tackle box or just come and enjoy the ocean.
